PLACEMENT STORY:At IITs, median offers are more modest

SOURCE: THE HINDU
Contrary to the media narrative on crore-plus offers at the IITs, the median salaries offered to new graduates are far more modest, internal data on placements obtained by The Hindu shows.
Like most years, the headlines on the 2015-16 placement season at the IITs were captured by the minority of students who got crore-plus offers from companies including Google and Facebook. However, these headlines miss the reality of IIT placement offers, a range of official sources and students said.
The handful of students who get offers for jobs overseas which tip the payscales over Rs.1 crore — just five per cent of all placements last year at IIT Bombay for instance — skew the average IIT graduate’s starting salary, as do Computer Science graduates, placement officers at several IITs said. The median — which reflects what the average student is offered — is far more modest; Rs. 8.5 lakh at IITB in 2014-15 for instance, according to Rahul Soni, placement manager at IITB. Data for the 2015-16 season was not available as the process is ongoing.
At IIT Kanpur, the median salary in the Computer Science stream in 2014-15 was Rs. 18 lakh, while the median for aerospace and civil engineering was Rs. 8 lakh, internal documents of IITK’s placement office show. At IIT Madras, the median salary for B.Tech students placed in 2014-15 was Rs. 10 lakh.
Most of the crore-plus salaries reported by the media are simple conversions into Indian currency of placement offers made in U.S. dollars, placement officials said. Many, however, are keen to point out that this is an unfair metric. “Those [crore-plus] salaries are nothing special,” Brijesh Kumar, assistant professor at IIT Roorkee, told The Hindu. “Every engineer in these companies starts with those salaries when they work in California because the cost of living is so high over there. The crore-plus packages that the companies advertise include stock components payable over five years contingent upon the person working there for that many years,” he said.
Moreover, it is meaningless to convert these salaries to Indian rupees because if the income is in dollars, so are the taxes and expenses, Mr. Kumar said. “All it does is to create unnecessary stress for students and unrealistic expectations for the parents. I feel sorry for my students who are burdened by these unrealistic expectations of the society around them,” he said.
While most students at the IITs have a realistic idea by the time the placement season comes of what salary they should expect on graduating, some are demoralised by the ‘crore-plus headlines’, students say. “What it does is push you towards taking a job that might not even be in the area you have studied or your passion because you do not want to turn down the big sums,” a student at IITB who had not been placed in the pre-placement season said. “So the computer science guys turn to the tech majors and the rest feel like they should try and catch the investment banks and consulting firms,” he said. “While most students have realistic expectations, often there is pressure from parents who feel that they have to recoup their investment,” Yash Shahi, dual degree Electrical Engineering student at IIT Kanpur who got placed at Intel said.

IIT Bombay to start Bachelor's programme in economics

Source: BS

The Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay plans to start a four-year undergraduate programme in economics the coming July, if its Senate approves, enrolling 30 students to begin with.

Devang V Khakhar, the institute’s director, said they had ample qualified faculty in economics and, if required, could also draw from their Sailesh J Mehta School of Management. “We have a huge faculty in economics as we have a big humanities programme with 34 faculty members. So, faculty is not an issue for beginning the programme,” he said.

Students would be selected through the same Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for engineering and the fee charged would be the same as for the BTech programme, Rs 90,000 a year.

Another IIT-Bombay professor said an economics programme was in high demand at the IITs and from companies coming for placement offers. IIT-Kharagpur and IIT-Kanpur have been operating a programme in economics for years and have seen good intake.

“Economics is no longer a liberal arts subject. It has acquired the characteristics of a science and engineering discipline,” said Vimal Kumar, convenor, economics discipline, IIT-Kanpur. They admit 40 undergraduate students for the economics programme, considered a successful one. Kumar adds, “If you look at the industry, they want people who can use economics well and analyse numbers. Our students of economics get as good placements as our engineering students.”

The new IITs at Patna, Mandi and Gandhinagar also offer various programmes in  humanities, arts and social sciences.

Admission to IITs, NITs: HRD Ministry gets positive feedback for JEE makeover

SOURCE : INDIAN EXPRESS
In what could lead to major changes in the admission process for IITs and NITs, the HRD Ministry has received positive public feedback on recommendations of a government-appointed panel, including introduction of a compulsory SAT-like aptitude test for aspirants, no weightage to school board marks and a single entrance exam.
The ministry had made the report of the Ashok Mishra Committee public last month for further consultation with stakeholders. The deadline for sending feedback was November 30.
According to sources, of the 100-odd responses received by the government, 67 have supported the removal of weightage given to Class XII marks at the time of admissions and nine have opposed the suggestion. Similarly, 23 are for introduction of a national-level aptitude test for engineering aspirants and two against it. Twenty-six respondents have favoured a single entrance examination — instead of the current two-tier test — for admissions to IITs, NITs and other centrally funded institutes.
Although the ministry has not taken a final decision, the feedback could push the government to announce another makeover for the admission process at the top engineering schools. However, no changes will be introduced for 2016-17.
The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) underwent a series of changes in 2013 after the then HRD Minister Kapil Sibal convinced engineering schools to give weightage to a candidate’s school performance. This was done to help students focus on their school education and wean them away from coaching classes. But a review by the institutions three years later showed the decision had made little difference to the coaching industry, in fact it increased its influence.
Both IITs and NITs are now in favour of scrapping the weightage to Class XII marks. The Ashok Mishra committee was set up to study this proposal and also the feasibility of conducting a single entrance test.
The panel also suggested that the candidates should take an aptitude test to prove their inclination for science and innovative thinking. Passing this test will be a prerequisite for appearing for JEE. The test, designed to reduce the coaching culture, could be offered two or more times in a year.

ABOUT THE COURSES

Excellence in higher education in the humanities and social sciences is evidently of growing importance around the world. By imparting quality education through this programme the Institute aims at producing well-rounded indvidiuals with sound training in thehumanities and social sciences to answer the needs of universities, research institutes and commercial and public sector enterprises. The programme draws its strength from the unique mix of streams.

STREAMS OFFERED

Integrated M.A. in Development Studies
Integrated M.A. in English Studies

A brief description of each stream of the programme is given below.

Development Studies:

This stream addresses questions of “order and change” in a globalizing world and aims to explore available approaches to fostering development, understood broadly as the goal of providing people the freedom to make their lives better. This will entail studying the web of relationships humans have with each other and the physical world, which can serve both as a constraint and a source of enormous creativity and ingenuity for achieving sustainable development.

How to analyse and address these issues therefore requires knowledge and skills from across the social sciences, which is what the inter-disciplinary area of Development Studies seeks to do. It covers such topics as economic development, the role of the state and markets, globalization, inequality, poverty, gender relations, environment, conflict, new social movements, politics and institutions, and so on. Courses include those in economics, urbanization, gender studies and science and technology studies as well as advanced topics in political philosophy and social theory. Graduates have career opportunities in government, academia, research organisations and industry.

English Studies:

The English Studies stream has been designed for students with sensitivity for literary and linguistic analyses. It provides an understanding of literatures in English from around the world with special emphasis on current debates in literary theory, lesser-known literatures and the importance of an interdisciplinary approach. It aims to introduce students to language, literary and cultural studies, with an emphasis on critical reading skills that would stand a student in good stead whatever s/he may eventually do in lifeStarting with introductory courses in the basics of language and literature, the stream covers the masters of English literary tradition, as well as major writers from other traditions – Asian, African, Latin American and Continental. A range of genre-based, author-based and period-based courses are offered so that students appreciate different kinds of literature in English in different periods of its history.

Courses in linguistics and the structure and function of natural languages as a system of cognition and communication are parts of this stream. Students are exposed to other Streams such as Economics, Sociology, History, and Philosophy so that they can have a range of career options from academics and editing to journalism and language training.
