JEE Main FORM: You can correct your particulars in January

CBSE has decided to display the particulars of the JEE aspirants who have applied online for JEE Main in the second week of January next year so that they can rectify their incorrect particulars.

The move comes after it was found that candidates have committed mistakes while filling particulars in their online registration form, CBSE said in a statement today.

However, no corrections can be carried for changes in examination cities and option for change of mode of examination from computer-based examination (online) to pen- and-paper based examination, it said.

The online registration form has been made available on JEE Main website from November 8 December 15.

As per the new format, aspirants for IIT will have to appear for JEE Main and then for JEE Advance.

More candidates for JEE-Advanced 2013

The list of candidates eligible to appear for JEE-Advanced 2013 can grown longer. A total of 1,50,000 JEE-Main candidates will be shortlisted to appear for JEE-Advanced. But there might be thousands more getting the aggregate score to be eligible for the next stage as there will be no tie-break mechanism at the stage of shortlisting candidates.
As there could be more than one candidate with similar aggregate score, this will give scope for more candidates to reach the final stage of their quest to acquire a seat in IIT.
In the reformed structure of the Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE), all undergraduate engineering admissions, will be conducted through a single entrance test. The reformed JEE will be conducted for the first time in 2013.
It has two stages – JEE-Main and JEE-Advanced. Admission to non-IIT institutes is to be conducted through JEE-Main and JEE-Advanced score will be considered for admission to IITs. “Only a candidate’s aggregate marks in JEE-Main will be considered and no tie-break mechanism will be implemented at this stage. This will make the list of eligible candidates slightly more than 1,50,000 due to bunching of candidates with the same aggregate marks at the bottom of each category,” says the JEE 2013 website.
Tom Mathew, chairman of the IIT Bombay zone of the JEE, said, “Since there will be more than one student with similar aggregate score in the JEE-Main, the number of eligible students for JEE-Advanced is expected to be more than 1,50,000.” Even after being shortlisted after JEE-Main, aspiring IITians will have to again register themselves for the JEE-Advanced.
Number Factor

• 50.5% of the 1,50,000 (75,750 candidates) will be taken from the top rankers of the Common Merit List (CML) of JEE (Main)
• 27% (40,500), 15% (22,500) and 7.5% (11,250) candidates will be taken from the top rankers of the category rank lists of OBC-NCL, SC and ST, respectively
• The candidates figuring in the category rank lists will be those who do not figure in the 75,750 candidates chosen from the CML

Unscrupulous tutorials milk Gujarat govt’s delayed nod to JEE

The late decision of Gujarat government to accept Joint Entrance Exam (JEE)-2013 for admission in the engineering colleges in state is haunting the students.
With only five months left for the test, coaching classes are minting money by charging higher coaching fee from engineering aspirants. Most of the students are finding it extremely difficult to cough up the exorbitant fees they are being subjected to.
“Just five months are left for the JEE (Main) exam and the tutorials have made the course fee very high which has pressurised parents to a great extent,” said Darshan Goradiya, student of a city-based school.
GUJCET, which was used as medium to give admission to students in state colleges has been replaced by the JEE (Main). The tutorials which used to charge around Rs5,000 to Rs15,000 till last year have hiked fees to as much as Rs20,000 to Rs50,000,” Goradiya said.
Claiming that the Gujarat state board students will face a daunting task in clearing the JEE (Main) exam, an official from Abhyas Tutorials said, “Till last year, it was just GUJCET which students could clear easily. However, JEE (Main) will be a new concept for every student and the delayed decision of the state government has forced tutorials to put in extra efforts to train students”, he added. The tutorial used to charge Rs 7,000 for GUJCET till last year which has increased to Rs 45,000 this year for JEE (Main).
“The fee is too high for anybody to afford. Sudden changes in paper patterns create panic among students and they will be forced to shell out higher fees as demanded by the coaching institutes,” said a parent of a Std XII student. The parent added that he has requested the coaching class to allow him to pay the fee in two instalments as it is difficult for him to cough up the money in one go.
Students are also facing issue with the new pattern of test they will be facing in JEE (Main). “The current academic batch is bound to suffer due to the decision,” said a Std 12 student of a city-based school.

JEE UPDATE: JEE MAIN FORMS AVAILABLE NOW FROM 8 NOVEMBER 2012

Those aspiring to study in premier engineering institutes like the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and National Institute of Technology (NIT) will have to shell out more for appearing in the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE)-2013 as JEE Mains and JEE Advance forms will have to be to filled up separately. This would mean spending more money than last year when only one form was filled. From 2013, the JEE will be held in two parts, Mains and Advance and only those who qualify the Mains will be allowed to appear in the Advance exam.

Candidates of the General and OBC categories will have to spend Rs 800 for the Mains form while Schedule Caste/Schedule Tribe (SC/ST) candidates will have to pay Rs 400 for the same purpose.

The JEE Advance forms will be available for Rs 1,800 for General and OBC category students and SC/ST students will have to pay Rs 1,000. Registration by girl candidates would be completely free. After filling the form online, candidates can get a print-out, attach a demand draft of Rs 800/400 and send it to CBSE Head Office In Delhi.

According to the IIT-Kanpur authorities, the JEE Mains form will be available from November 8 to be filled online. The process will continue till December 15.

Earlier, the forms had to be filled from November 1 but as preparations for the same were not complete, the date was postponed for a week.

The JEE Mains will be held for the first time. Therefore, the facility of filling exam form online has been provided to the candidates. The JEE Mains is being conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in 2013. The draft has to be in the name of Secretary, CBSE New Delhi. JEE Mains would be held on April 7 and results declared in May. The top 1.5 lakh students qualifying the JEE Mains will only be able to appear in JEE Advance. Only successful candidates will be required to fill JEE Advance form. The exam would be conducted by all IITs and spearheaded by IIT-Delhi.

49.5% reserved category candidates in JEE (advance)

General candidates will have to be in the top 75,750 candidates in the Joint Entrance Exam-Main (JEE-Main) overall merit list to make it for the second-stage exam for entry to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) next year. The remaining candidates will be drawn from reserved category merit lists. A new notification has been issued by the IITs. 
Totally, 1.5 lakh candidates who crack the JEE-Main will be able to sit for the JEE-Advanced; the two-step format introduced from 2013. The top 75,750 (which may include reserved candidates) will be eligible for the next exam.
Of the rest, 40,500 will be the top OBC (Non Creamy layer) candidates, 22,500 Scheduled Caste and 11,250 Scheduled Tribe candidates. "The logical thing to do was to shortlist candidates in proportion to seats allotted at the IITs."

CUT OFF MARKS FOR JEE IN RAJASTHAN BOARD

आईआईटी-जेईई परीक्षा के लिए कट आफ मार्क्स 

अजमेर। राजस्थान माध्यमिक शिक्षा बोर्ड ने आईआईटी-जेईई परीक्षा के लिए निर्घारित 20 परसनटाइल फार्मूले के मद्देनजर वर्ष 2012 की मुख्य परीक्षा नतीजों के आधार पर संभावित  कट ऑफ मार्क्स घोषित कर दिए हैं। केन्द्रीय मानव संसाधन मंत्रालय के निर्देश पर केन्द्रीय माध्यमिक शिक्षा बोर्ड ने जेईई परीक्षा का 20 परसनटाइल फार्मूला तय कर रखा है।

बोर्ड अध्यक्ष डॉ. सुभाष गर्ग ने बताया कि फिलहाल जारी किए कट ऑफ मार्क्स विद्यार्थियों के अनुमान के लिए है। अलबत्ता अंतिम कट ऑफ मार्क्स में मामूली परिवर्तन हो सकता है। जेईई में प्रविष्ट होने के लिए राजस्थान बोर्ड के परीक्षार्थियों के लिए मुख्य परीक्षा 2013 का परिणाम आधार होगा।

की परीक्षाओं में गणित विषय सहित उत्तीर्ण विज्ञान वर्ग के परीक्षार्थियों को अपने परिणाम सुधार के लिए विशेष अवसर मिलेगा। यह मौका महज विज्ञान वर्ग में गणित विषय से 2011 एवं 12 में उत्तीर्ण परीक्षार्थियों को मिलेगा। नियमित विद्यार्थी अपने विद्यालय तथा स्वयंपाठी विद्यार्थी अग्रेषण अघिकारी के माध्यम से सुधार के लिए आवेदन-पत्र प्रस्तुत करेंगे।

परिणाम सुधार के लिए  विशेष परीक्षा के लिए ऑनलाइन आवेदन  करने की अंतिम तिथि 9 नवम्बर 12 एवं ऑन लाइन श्ुाल्क जमा कराने की अंतिम तिथि 10 नवम्बर तय की गई है। नियमित परीक्षार्थियों के लिए परीक्षा शुल्क 450 रूपए, जबकि स्वयंपाठी विद्यार्थियों के लिए 500 रूपए शुल्क तय किया गया है। यह शुल्क आईसीआईसीआई बैंक की किसी भी शाखा में जमा कराया जा सकता है।

IF YOU ARE CONFIDENT OF CLEARING IIT JEE(NOW MAIN AND ADVANCE BOTH) Don't Bother About 12th score

Well what we always have seen and believed and reminded our students that if you are going to clear IIT JEE you are sure to perform well in boards also. With introduction of XII marks as an eligibility criterion from JEE 2013 still I feel for good students there's no need of worry on that account. To confirm my belief I want to share with you an interesting article being written by Prof. Dheeraj Sanghi of IIT KANPUR. Read it below its a very nice compilation
There has been a lot of debate about eligibility of students getting admission to IITs, whether it should stay at 60 percent, may be go up slightly, say 65%, or should it become 80 percentile, or may be a slightly lower percentile. But all this has been without any data on what would be the impact of any of these eligibility conditions on the selected students.

So, I got the data of 12th class performance of all JEE admitted students this year to IIT Kanpur, and tried to analyze it. Of course, we will not know the impact of 60% eligibility, since those who get less marks than that, perhaps don't even go for counseling, and most likely would not take admission, knowing fully well that they have to submit their mark-sheet by 30th September. But JEE office informally tells me that such students are very rare.

Since COBSE has announced percentage marks equivalent to 80 percentile only for General Category students, we looked at only those students marks in the 12th class. Since 80 percentile was given only for 2012, we have assumed that the marks would have been same in 2011 as well.

Out of 398 General Category students, 14 students would not have been eligible for admission to IITs. That is 3.5 percent.

And one may note that the current COBSE list is based on 80 percentile of all students registered for the 12th class board exam in that particular board. It has already been pointed out that the IIT Council decision was to consider 80 percentile of only successful students. It means that the cut-offs of eligibility in different boards would be higher by at least one percent, and a few more students would be then ineligible, say 4 percent. This is not a small number. Assuming that a similar fraction would be seen in SC/ST/PD/OBC candidates as well, we are talking about making 400 odd candidates (out of 10,000) ineligible for admission to IITs after they have performed well in JEE Mains and JEE Advanced.

I have said in an earlier blog that in the transition year, instead of doing too many changes at once, we should bring in changes slowly, and in particularly argued that a scheme which makes just 1 percent of candidates ineligible would put strong enough pressure to take schooling seriously. I have also argued that in view of lack of data on comparison between different boards, even if IITs want to change the eligibility condition to percentile format, it should be kept low at 70 percentile in the transition year. Well, it so happens, that if we look at the percentage marks corresponding to 70 percentile, and then see how many students would not have made it to IIT system, it would have been 4 out of 398, just one percent.

Another interesting point to note is that out of 14 students identified as below 80 percentile, 12 are from CBSE and 2 from Andhra Board. Now, we all know that CBSE board is much tougher than state boards. The standard of education is much higher, and  there is more than enough evidence to show that 80 percentile of CBSE actually has a much better academic preparation than 80 percentile in many state boards. We are just waiting for these 12 students to go to court next year.

Of course, there are too many variables that we don't know. What happens to the reserved category students. Is the statistics similar at other IITs (no reason to believe that it will be different). Because of additional coaching of 12th class this year, would most students getting through JEE advanced will also get 80+ percentile scores, or will because of additional coaching of 12th class this year, the 80 percentile cutoff will increase and there will be more students who would have been selected in JEE Advanced, but would be deemed ineligible.

Only time will tell how much chaos is waiting to happen in June-July 2013.

Added on 11th October: 

More data and interesting observations:

Out of 398 students whose data I have, 296 are from CBSE (74%), 76 are state boards (19%), 25 are from ICSE (6%), and one student from another board.

The distribution of percentile is more interesting. In CBSE, out of 296, 252 have 90+ percentile, 33 have 80-90 percentile, 9 have 70-80 percentile, and 3 have less than 70 percentile. In case of state boards, pretty much all students of all states have 90+ percentile, except AP board, where 2 students are in 80-90 range, 1 student in 70-80 range, and 1 student has less than 70 percentile. In ICSE board also, 24 out of 25 have 90+ percentile, and only one student is in 80-90 percentile.

What this means is that a student who can pass JEE with a top-5000 general category rank does not have to bother about getting 80 percentile in a state board at all, in fact, not even 90 percentile. But a CBSE student who can pass JEE with a top-5000 general category rank still has to worry about clearing the 80 percentile hurdle.

This also means that if students want higher percentile, they should leave CBSE board schools and join state board schools. This will not only help them in focusing on JEE and not worry abut 80 percentile at all, but it will also help them in getting higher ranks for NITs, where the percentile score is being included in the ranking.

What an interesting idea sir jee?
To improve the quality of school education, you incentivise people to leave better schools and better boards.

FINALLY RELIEF FOR STUDENTS REPEATING FOR IIT JEE

Students who appeared for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) in 2012 and are reappearing for the entrance exam in 2013 will be admitted to IITs only on the basis of the 60% eligibility rule.

"Those who passed their 12th board exam in 2012 should have 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PD candidates) to be able to secure seats in IITs," says the JEE website updated on Sunday.

"Top 20 percentile rule will be applicable for those reappearing for the 2013 12th board exam (to improve their marks), if they use their 2013 exam results to apply for the JEE. Students who plan to use their 2012 results will be selected only on basis of the 60% eligibility rule. This will be a one-time exception," the website adds.
The joint admission board of the IITs had submitted this suggestion to the IIT council earlier. It was later approved by HRD minister Kapil Sibal. IIT Kanpur had made a similar suggestion in its senate meeting two months ago.
It has also been decided that for foreign students, the CBSE 20 percentile cut-off will be considered as the eligibility criteria.
"At times, the data from foreign board students will not be available on time. We wouldn't like to penalise the students because of this. In such cases, we will take the 20 percentile cut-off to decide their eligibility," says  Dr GB Reddy, organising chairperson of JEE 2012.
