JoSAA: Spot Round Decision to be taken tomorrow

Decision about vacant seat in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs will be taken in the meeting of JoSAA which is scheduled on 1st August 2015. Interested candidates may visit JoSAA web site (josaa.nic.in)/CSAB web site (csab.nic.in) after 1st August 2015

A total of 184 seats remain vacant after the last round of admission in the NITs/IIITs and 18 other government-funded technical institutes. While admissions have come to a close, authorities will soon decide whether to have a round of spot admissions at individual institutes or close the admission process. 

Several students have written to the JoSAA to surrender their seats and demanded their acceptance fee of Rs 45,000 be refunded, but the authorities have, so far, remained silent on their pleas. According to the rules, a student who accepts a seat has to pay a fee for the same. Later, if the student gets a better option elsewhere and pulls out of the admission process, the fee is not refunded. 

"We do have some seats that are vacant because students did not report to the institute. We plan on discussing the matter on refund of acceptance fees as well as having a round of spot admissions," said a source. 

Meanwhile, students said they were looking at the option of taking legal recourse if their fees were not refunded. "The sum we have paid is not petty change. Why then must they not refund it? The authorities can cut some administrative costs and refund the rest," said a parent.

Newer IITs Still not able to attract the top rankers

If further proof is needed of how top-ranking candidates are shunning the new IITs, here's some data to consider: of the top 1,000 rank holders in the qualifying exam, only 20 have been roped in and all of them by IIT Hyderabad. 

"There's not much difference over can the last few years in the ranking of JEE Advanced and the choice of the institutes by the students," said Adrijit Goswami, chairman of the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. Some directors feel the newer institutes, which started in 2008 or later, still have a long way to go before they can be compared with the older IITs. "They will take at least four to five years to be able to compete with the old IITs," said Pradipta Banerji, director of IIT Roorkee. However, he added that the students' preference was clearly driven by coaching institutes. 
"These ranks are not a fair measure to judge the popularity of any IIT," Banerji said. Among the top 2,000 rank holders, 29 students have opted for five new IITs. The remaining five IITs attracted none. After IIT Hyderabad, the institute at Indore is the most popular with 15 of the top 2,000 rank holders, while IIT Ropar got 11 and those at Mandi and Gandhinagar and the Indian School of Mines Dhanbad got one each. 

"Our students prefer the old IITs and then the established NITs (National Institutes of Technology) to the new IITs," said Aakash Chaudhry, director of Aakash Education Services, a coaching institute that trains students for the JEE and other engineering entrance exams. The JEE (Advanced) is taken by candidates seeking admission to the IITs, while the JEE (Main) is for entry into the NITs, which were earlier known as the Regional Engineering Colleges, and other technical institutions funded by the central and state governments. 

According to Manindra Agrawal, IIT Kanpur's dean of faculty affairs, students prefer to go with the NITs rather than any new IIT because of the faculty, infrastructure and better track record of placements. 

"The new IITs need more time for anyone to judge them. Institutes take decades and even centuries to become globally established," said IIT Ropar director Sarit K Das.

 In the midst of a raging debate over old versus new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), IIT Ropar stands out among the new ones in terms of its most coveted course BTech (computer science and engineering). Next only to IIT Hyderabad, which is better placed, the Ropar institute has fared much better than those in Indore, Patna, Jodhpur and Bhubaneswar. IIT Gandhinagar is not listed for the course.

The popularity of the course at IIT Ropar is reflected in the opening ranks of the open category' for the second round of counselling. However, a clearer picture will emerge only after the third and final counselling on July 18.

"In case of computer science, IIT Ropar has stood out among the new institutes so far, except for the one in Hyderabad. There could be some shuffling of students based on their preference in the third counselling," said professor P K Raina, dean, academic affairs and research.

"Apart from BTech, the department also offers PhD programme in computer science and engineering. It has taken up the challenge to attract world class faculty in all areas of the subject.

"The objective is to continue building on the initial momentum and to attract the best students and the faculty over the coming years," added a senior faculty member.

IIT Ropar is one of the eight new IITs set up by the Union ministry of human resource development (HRD) in 2008 to expand the reach and enhance the quality of technical education in the country.

The other new institutes are IIT Mandi (Himachal Pradesh), IIT Jodhpur (Rajasthan), IIT Gandhinagar (Gujarat), IIT Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh), IIT Indore (Madhya Pradesh), IIT Bhubaneswar (Odisha) and IIT Patna (Bihar).

Despite facing acute space constraints, IIT Ropar offers BTech in computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering.

The programmes are spread over a period of eight semesters and the institute admits 40 students in each branch, selected through IIT joint entrance examination (JEE) conducted every year. In addition, the institute now offers doctoral programme in several disciplines.

1st batch of BS grads passes out of IISc

A bunch of 27 students from the four-year undergraduate BS (bachelor of science) program of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) created history of sorts by becoming the first ever batch to formally graduate from the century-old institute. 

Some of the students have secured seats in renowned foreign institutions where they will pursue further studies.   

The BS programme thrusts on research and is interdisciplinary in nature covering a wide spectrum of subjects ranging from pure sciences such as physics, chemistry, biology to those such as materials science, engineering and even humanities.   

An excited Indrashis Datta, who specialised in biology, just returned from an internship stint at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland said, “I came back just to attend the convocation and I will be leaving tonight.”

Indrashis will be pursuing a Masters degree at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. 

His classmate, Himan Galagali will be heading to the renowned John’s Hopkins University, USA, on a full scholarship. She wishes to pursue research  in molecular biology  “My time here was quite good. There was a good peer group, good instructors,” she said. 
Many from the undergraduate batch had given up seats in prestigious engineering and medical colleges in favour of research at IISc. 

Pranav Garg, who specialised in Physics, got a very good rank of 569 in the IIT-JEE exams and could have easily got seat in any of the prestigious IITs. He will now be heading to University of British Colombia, Canada. 

Another student, Sriram S, had a chance to go to NIT, Surathkal and Mysore Medical College, however, he choose to pursue life sciences at IISc.  Similarly, Indrashis and Himani had forfeited their seats at Benaras Hindu University and Bangalore Medical College respectively.

Why many IITians fail to cope with the curriculum after clearing entrance?

I am writing this article in response to the article published in Economic Times with the same heading.

The writer here seems to be only touching the things superficially and not working hard enough to first find what really is the issue and what are the causes? 

The  parts I fully agree with in the article are

"With the number of IITs going up and the old IITs expanding more seats, there is a huge gap in the merit of the top students compared to the students at the bottom," said Anurag Sharma, dean of academics at IIT-Delhi. 
"There are many such students who have entered the IITs with zero interest in engineering" said IIT-Gandhinagar director Sudhir Jain. 

Reason#1

RESERVATION

I think most of you will agree that this is the most important cause for such outcomes.

Firstly IITs should release the data about how many of the expelled students were from reserved categories. With the implementation of OBC reservation, government increased the seats in order to have same number of general seats as before and in a very hasty manner increased the burden on the institutes which I don't think they were ready to take.In this drama of OBC and General its the SC and ST candidates whose number increased magically . This magical increase is what has led to the present problem. Its not only the problem of quality of students but the undue burden on institutes because of increased number of seats is also hurting everyone.

Reason#2

Deterioration IN PRIMARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION STANDARDS

With the decline is shine on Govt. Schools a lot of Private public schools have mushroomed all over the country which don't have the honest(note the word) and even proper qualified teachers. As a result greater number of small coaching institutes or tuition teachers have also come up at the I-X class level who are promoting the rote learning as majority of them themselves even don't know the concepts really. Plus the books have changed but the teachers were not trained to teach on the lines and this mismatch is also hurting.

I again sincerely appeal to all of you that please don't single out IIT Coaching Institutes as 100% responsible for all the debacles. I agree that many of IIT coaching institutes are actually not helping students to actually learn and enjoy the Science and Mathematics but some are doing it very well.

JEE (M) ranks soar post revised Class XII scores

Several students whose Class XII scores increased after re-evaluation, have found their JEE (Main) ranks rise by a few hundred and, in some cases, even thousands.
Although CBSE did not make any official announcement for the revised rank list on their official website, several students could see their new ranks on it on Friday.
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) said meritorious students will get seats of their choice according to revised ranks, provided they have filled their choices in a decreasing order of preferences.
Several students, though, said a revision now does not mean much. One said it is unfair as they have filled their choices online according to their original ranks and the first round of seat allotment is already over. And students will not get a second chance to fill choices.
One student said CBSE should have taken into account revised scores before coming up with JEE (Main) rank lists.
A JoSAA official said, "There is a provision of supernumerary seats in NITs for students whose ranks rise after re-evaluation. Revised ranks will be considered and students will get a seat in the institutes they desire according to their new ranks, provided they have filled their choices in a decreasing order of preferences. They should have considered the possibility of a rise in ranks."
M Goel, who had secured 1,833 rank in JEE (Main), saw it jump to 536 after revision of his Class XII marks. Though his first choice was Computer Science (CS), Goel may not get a CS seat in any top NIT now. "With 1,833, I would not have been eligible for any. But now, with the 536th rank, I would have managed a seat in NITs in Warangal, Surathkal or Trichy. But I have filled in my choices on the basis of my original rank," said Goel. In the first round of allotment, announced on June 7, he secured a seat in Material Science and Metallurgy at IIT-Bombay with JEE (Advanced) rank, which he will take..
Another student, A Gangwal, saw her rank jump from 17,441 to 9,750. She hopes to get a better seat after the revision.
